Event will be good and garlickly

Stan Kamita's love of garlic will permeate this weekend's Taste of Nu'uanu. The event co-chairman is a believer in the curative powers of the bulb and plans to serve it in Garlic-Ginger Chicken Adobo and Garlic Scrambled Eggs, not to mention his true specialty, Stan's Pickled Garlic.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Nu'uanu Congregational Church. It's free, with $1 scrip sold for food.

As for the food, many in the congregation have stepped forward to brand their contributions: Mark's Burgers by Mark Au, Patty's Almond Float by Patty Kuroiwa, Florence's Japoticaba Jelly by Florence Takaki, Aunty Julie Lindsay's Hilo Parmesan Chicken, Leolinda Parlin's Winning Potato Salad and Dr. Donald Ikeda's Mango Chutney.

In the spirit of community, all these home chefs will give out their recipes.

There will also be a cooking demonstration and food sale by private chef Lance Nitahara. And the last copies of the second addition "Women of Nu'uanu Cookbook -- Itadakimasu II" will be sold, for $5.

The church hopes to raise at least $6,000 for scholarship and ministry programs.

Rap a veggie

Is there a vegetable that just makes you want to sing? A fruit that inspires you to spout poetry? Just how much do you love that raw crunchy stuff?

Put it into an original rap song and submit it to the "Rap a Rainbow" contest sponsored by the Oceanic 16 cable show "Tasty and Meatless."

Grand prize in each age category is an inflatable body board from Bikefactory and a gift basket from Tower Records, plus the chance to perform the winning rap on the air. Second- and third-place prize packages will also be awarded.

Enter individually or as a group by submitting a cassette tape of your rap song to "Rap a Rainbow Contest," P.O.Box 240974, Honolulu 96821.

Categories are age 13 and under and ages 13 to 19. The first 24 entries will receive a Bikefactory sports bottle.

Deadline to enter is Nov. 15, with winners announced Nov. 30. Visit the show's Web site, www.tastyandmeatless.com, for contest rules and details.

Recipes wanted

And while we're talking good health and kids, Koko Head Elementary School is in need of recipes for healthy dishes, to be published in a benefit cookbook celebrating the school's 50th anniversary.

If you are a Koko Head student (current or former) or staffer, send in a healthy version of a favorite recipe. Especially needed are those that "ease more vegetables, fruits, whole-grains and lean meats into the family's daily diet."

Sections will include: easy, kid-friendly recipes; local favorites made with less fat and sodium; barbecue; salads; "veggie-powered" entrées; crockpot dishes and desserts (these don't have to be healthy).

Be sure to include complete ingredient lists and instructions, plus a description of the dish and your contact information.

E-mail them to paulabender@hotmail.com or send a copy to Koko Head Elementary School, 50th Anniversary Cookbook, care of Friends of Koko Head SCBM, 189 Lunalilo Home Road, Honolulu 96825.

Deadline is Nov. 11. The cookbook will be available in the spring.
