Rainbow Wahine tripped
up by SMU

Seven minutes, 20 seconds.

That is all the time the Southern Methodist soccer team needed to erase a 2-0 deficit and hand Hawaii its first Western Athletic Conference loss last night in Dallas.

The defeat ended the Rainbow Wahine's seven-match unbeaten streak and was their first loss in regular-season play on the road in 10 matches.

Trailing 2-0 at the half, the Mustangs scored at 51:46 on a header by Kimber Bailey off a corner kick by Olivia O'Rear. Punahou graduate Adria Campbell tied the scored at 56:07 when she put a rebound home after a flurry of shots in front of the UH goal. The game-winner came on a 30-yard shot by Allison Brill at 59:06, a ball that came from the left flank and floated into the right corner over backpeddling UH goalkeeper Erin Chow.

Chow, a senior who posted consecutive shutouts in two WAC matches at home last week, took over for Mahie Atay to start the second half.

Atay, who suffered two concussions earlier this year, held SMU (7-2-2, 2-0-1) scoreless in the first half by making four saves. However, with 10 minutes to go before intermission, Atay, who was outside the penalty box, stopped a hard Mustang shot with her face. She did not play the second half and is questionable for tomorrow's match at Texas-El Paso.

"We were told just before the start of the second half that Mahie would not be able to play," said UH coach Pinsoom Tenzing. "Obviously, her health is more important than the outcome of the game. She seemed to be all right after the game, but we'll wait and see."

The Wahine (9-3-2 overall, 2-1 WAC) started very fast when Natasha Kai stole a ball and powered a 25-yard shot into the upper left corner of the goal just 16 seconds into the match.

Hawaii took a 2-0 lead at 18:14 when Kai scored again. She took a pass from Seline Williams, shook off three SMU defenders and bent a left-footed shot into the net.

This was Kai's first multigoal match of the season.

"We played terrific soccer in the first half, but it was a game of two halves. Our kids played very protective soccer in the second half and that is not the way to do business when you are two goals up," said Tenzing.

"SMU played very well in the second half. You have to give them credit. They came out like gangbusters and were in our half of the field for the first 10 or 15 minutes."

The Wahine travel today to El Paso, a place they have not won in two previous trips, for tomorrow's match with the Miners (8-2-1, 1-0-1).

"We will get everyone in a room and talk to them about the importance of forgetting this (SMU loss)," said Tenzing. "We will learn from it and be ready for the next one. We did this after the Duke loss and went seven matches without a defeat. We can do that again."
