Indigo hits
10-year mark

TWO MAJOR players in downtown Honolulu's arts and entertainment scene celebrate anniversaries this weekend.

Tomorrow night, Indigo celebrates 10 years of business with a special appearance by Jesse Saunders, the Chicago deejay credited with releasing the first house music record ("On & On") back in 1984.

Resident deejays from Indigo's "Get Fresh!" weekly will also be on hand to spin at this 21-and-over party. DJs Mark Chittom, Sovern T, G-Spot, Esake and Compose rock the decks starting at 10 p.m., and the first 400 paid covers receive a special commemorative mix CD. Call 521-2900 ...

JUST DOWN the street at Studio 1, the art gallery/performance space celebrates its second anniversary on Saturday night.

Doors open at 7 p.m. for this 18-and-over celebration, which features five live acts and one well-known deejay -- the 2004 Hawaii Slam Team, Melodious Solutions, Quadraphonix, Communication, the Iona Contemporary Dance Theatre and Kavet the Catalyst.

Cover charge starts at $5 for this one, but management asks that you chip in a little bit more to support the gallery if you can afford to do so. Call 550-8700 for more info ...

FOLLOWING TUESDAY night's old-school "Pussycat Lounge," the Wave Waikiki goes retro tomorrow and Saturday nights with the "Ultimate '80s Weekend."

Performing live both nights is the 80'z All-Stars, a quartet from San Diego that travels the country "preaching the '80s gospel" with covers of Van Halen, the Beastie Boys, Flock of Seagulls, Men at Work and others. DJs Syze1, ShawnG, KSM, Alex and Byron the Fur will be digging deep in their crates to bring you the best of the '80s in the mix as well.

Both nights also feature an '80s costume contest, with $100 in cash given to the first-place winner. Cover is $12 before midnight, but you get in free with a "full on" '80s outfit. Call 941-0424, ext. 12 ...

AND FOR those looking for a bit more "family friendly" event to check out this weekend, I've got two parties to let you know about.

First up is the "Fall 2004 Outdoor Concert" at Kapiolani Community College on Saturday night. The free show is geared toward returning students, but is also open to the general public as a gesture of good will by the school.

Bring your lawn chairs and beach mats, and enjoy live performances by Na 'Oiwi, Da Braddahs and Hapa starting at 6 p.m. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase ...

ON SUNDAY, bring the family to the "Molokai Hoe Block Party," a celebration for participants in the annual Molokai-to-Oahu outrigger canoe race that takes place earlier in the day.

From 4:30 to 10 p.m. on Sunday, the parking lot across from Ward 16 Theatres will feature live performances by Hot Rain and Paradise XS. Island 98.5 afternoon jock Makani will also be there broadcasting live. Five bucks gets you in; keiki 12 years and under are free ...
