Salvage of air crash continues on Kauai

A salvage crew is set to retrieve the remaining wreckage today of a Bali Hai Helicopter Tours Jet Ranger that slammed into a Kauai mountainside last month, a National Transportation Safety Board official said.

Pacific Helicopters of Maui got most of the wreckage in a run last week but will try this morning to get some vital parts that were left behind, NTSB investigator Nicole Charnon said yesterday.

"We don't have any land skids or the tail rotor system," she said.

The accident, which killed the helicopter's four passengers and pilot, occurred Sept. 24 when the aircraft was finishing its circle-island flight. The crash site, at more than 3,000 feet in a nearly vertical slope, has made the wreckage recovery difficult.

Pieces of the craft have been taken to a hangar in Lihue.

Charnon said the chopper's engine will be sent to the manufacturer, where officials are expected to look for possible defects or other problems.

Killed in the accident were pilot Shankar Tummala, a former Indian military pilot who had recently moved to Kauai; Willy Braun, 59, and Heike Braun, 38, of Germany; and Tamara Zytkowski, 30, of Avon, Ohio, and her boyfriend, Thomas Huemmer, also of Avon.

City gets $400,000 for terror response

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has awarded the city's Emergency Services Department $400,000 to help respond to new weapons of mass destruction.

The bulk of the funds, $250,000, will be used to prepare responses to such disasters as detonation of a dirty bomb. The remaining $150,000 will go for planning, training and purchasing equipment for health needs following a mass casualty incident.

The grant is part of $46 million in Metropolitan Medical Response System grants going to 114 jurisdictions throughout the country this fiscal year.

2 hospitalized after fight with bricks

Police are investigating a fight in Nanakuli early Saturday that sent two men to the hospital with head injuries.

The fight broke out about 12:50 a.m. at a home on the 87-100 block of Waiolu St., where three men -- ages 20, 23 and 44 -- were playing dominos in a garage.

Police said a truck of more than 10 men, described as the suspects' friends, drove up to the home and threatened to fight with the three men in the garage.

A fight broke out in front of the home between the victims and four suspects -- ages 16, 18, 19, and 23. Police said the suspects had not come in the truck with the other men.

The suspects allegedly used bricks to strike the victims on the head, police said.

When police arrived, one suspect fled. Three suspects arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and first-degree reckless endangerment were released yesterday pending an investigation.

Police did not have details on the conditions of the victims, but said two were transported to Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center for head injuries.

Tejada said no homes were evacuated, and smoke was blowing away from any nearby neighborhoods.

The cause of the fire, which mostly burned low brush, is under investigation.
