BYUH sweeps regional tennis titlesSecond-seeded Jing Jing Liu of Brigham Young-Hawaii upset her top-seeded teammate, Adrienn Hegedus, yesterday to win the singles title of the Wilson ITA Small College Division II West Region Women's Tennis Championship at La Jolla, Calif.Liu downed Hegedus 7-6, 6-3 for Hegedus' first loss in more than two years. The two then teamed to top Dehlia Feliz and Katrina Homberg of Cal Poly Pomona 8-1 for the doubles title. In another all-BYUH singles final, No. 2 seed Dorian Porada outlasted top-seeded teammate Dillon Porter, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-1 to earn the men's title. Liu, Hegedus and Porada all advance to the national tournament, Oct. 14-17, in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Vulcans fall in volleyballOlivia Munro put down 18 kills to lead Montana State-Billings to a 30-25, 25-30, 30-14, 30-19 win over Hawaii-Hilo in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match last night at the UHH gym.Christina Cooley led the Vulcans with 14 kills and Maite Ardies had 12. UHH fell to 4-10 overall, 1-4 in the PacWest; the Yellow Jackets improved to 8-5 and 2-3. Seasiders win: Brigham Young-Hawaii won its first the PacWest match last night, defeating Western New Mexico 30-28, 30-14, 31-29 at the Cannon Activities Center. The Seasiders are 7-6 overall, 1-4 in conference. The Mustangs dropped to 14-7 and 2-3.
Warriors finish 16th in golfThe Hawaii men's golf team finished 16th out of 19 teams at the William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.The Warriors shot an aggregate 903 for the three rounds, well off the winning pace by Arizona (855). Sophomore Pierre-Henri Soero was the top UH golfer, finishing tied for 62nd with a 10-over 226. UNLV's Ryan Moore carded a 7-under 65 yesterday to claim the individual title at 205.
Rainbow Wahine 18th in cross countrySophomore Dana Buchanan was the top Hawaii finisher for the second meet in a row, placing 26th at yesterday's 32nd Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago.Buchanan finished the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes and 11 seconds. DePaul's Leah Rygh won in 17:24. The Rainbow Wahine placed 18th in the gold division with 433 points. Marquette took the team title with 79 points.
