No. 9 Iolani put the hurt
on ailing Pac-Five

The Raiders defeat the Wolfpack 38-13
to improve to 2-0 in league play

Iolani rolled over Pac-Five 38-13 in a key Division II matchup at Aloha Stadium last night.

The Raiders, ranked No. 9 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10, improved to 2-0 in league play (5-0 overall). The Wolfpack dropped to 0-1-1 (3-2-1 overall).

Pac-Five has not been the same since being decimated by injuries during a three-game preseason slate against Oahu Interscholastic Association schools.

Iolani, meanwhile, has shown no ill effects of the pre-league slate against public-school teams. Last night, the speedy Raiders kept Pac-Five passing ace Bryson Bernie under control.

"We didn't contain Bernie on the ground, but we did it when he went to the air," Iolani coach Wendell Look said. "Our DBs did a helluva job."

The secondary kept wraps around Wolfpack receiver Cody Walker as well.

"We shut down No. 2, and he'd been a threat for them," Look said.

Quarterback Kiran Kepo'o, a 6-2, 220-pound senior, had a solid performance against a Wolfpack defense that has seen its share of potent passing attacks.

"He made great reads and made great throws," Look said. "He just needs to game-manage better -- watch the clock and make sure everyone is set."

Look also praised junior Christian Johnson. The 5-8, 200-pound linebacker moved to nose guard from inside linebacker for the first time. In all, the Raiders not only occupy first place in the Division II race -- they have reason to be optimistic as next week's showdown with Kamehameha looms.

"Their goal is to win the ILH championship, period. They're not gonna settle for just D-II," said Look, now in his 14th season as head coach. "They've grown together as a team. This is one of the most unselfish teams I've coached."
