Rainbow Wahine best of the West

The Hawaii women's volleyball team is ranked first in its region in the season's first ratings released yesterday.

According to RichKern.com, the AVCA ranking for the West Region has the Rainbow Wahine (10-0) on top followed by Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara, Colorado State and Utah.

Other regional No. 1s are: Nebraska, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Florida, Louisville and St. Mary's.

The rankings are not associated with the official NCAA rankings but are based on a computerized formula similar to the NCAA's.

The Rainbow Wahine remained in the No. 6 spot in the CSTV coaches poll released yesterday. Minnesota is No. 1 in the poll, followed by Washington, Southern California and Penn State.

Warriors third after first round

Junior Derek Hamamoto shot a three-under 69 to lead the University of Hawaii men's golf team to a third-place finish after round one of the Ron Moore Classic yesterday in Denver.

Hamamoto sits in fifth place individually. Arizona leads the tournament with a 10-under 278.

Vulcans lead Viking Invitational: The UH-Hilo men's golf team sits in first place of the 33rd Annual Viking Invitational at Bellingham, Wash., yesterday with a two-round total of 570, five strokes ahead of Western Washington.

Mustangs sweep Vulcans in Hilo

Liz Narkon hit .400 and put down 19 kills for Western New Mexico in its annual trip to Hilo yesterday.

The Mustangs (14-4, 2-0 PacWest) beat the struggling Vulcans (4-9, 1-3) 30-22, 30-26, 30-28.

Narkon, who prepped at St. Francis, led WNMU in kills and was second with 11 digs. Christina Cooley led Hilo with 13 kills.

Oliveira named player of the week: Hawaii Pacific junior Vera Oliveira was named the Pacific West Conference player of the week yesterday after leading the Sea Warriors past Chaminade last Friday in four sets.

The setter from Londrina, Brazil, finished the game with 41 assists, 12 digs, six kills and three aces, and currently is 30th in the nation in assists per game.
