Kaneohe licensing site will not be reopened

The driver's license facility in the Kaneohe Police Station will not reopen when building renovations are completed next month.

Safety, parking and limited staffing were factors that led to the decision to shut down the facility, officials said.

"Our staff, police and the community have become increasingly concerned about applicants beginning their road tests by turning into traffic across from Benjamin Parker Elementary School," said city spokeswoman Carol Costa. The police station sits across Waikalua Road from the school.

The satellite city hall at Windward Mall experienced a 96 percent increase in driver's license renewals and duplicates after the facility closed for renovations.
