Head-on collision leads to man's death

A 28-year-old Honaunau man died Friday after a head-on collision on the Hawaii Belt Road, near the 72-mile marker in Kau.

Johnnie P. Gouveia was driving a 1988 Chevrolet multipurpose vehicle westbound and collided with a gray 1986 Toyota two-door sedan traveling eastbound about 6:42 p.m., Big Island police reported. Gouveia was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital.

Police did not identify the driver of the Toyota, who was also transported to Kona Community Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Police are investigating whether speed or alcohol could have been factors. Any witnesses to the accident are encouraged to call Acting Sgt. Norbert Serrao Jr. at 961-2332.

This is the 31st highway fatality on the Big Island this year, compared to 22 at the same time last year, police said.

Kauai woman killed after car flips over rail

LIHUE » A Kokee woman died Friday when the vehicle she was driving flipped over a guard rail on Waimea Canyon Drive and slid about 200 feet down an embankment.

Kauai police said Gloria Duarte was alone in the vehicle, which crossed the center line and then flipped over a guardrail. She was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene, police said.

Duarte, whose age was not given, had been reported missing at 7:30 a.m. Friday. The wreck was discovered about 9:50 p.m., police said.

Japanese tourist dies after snorkeling

A 60-year-old visitor from Japan apparently drowned in a snorkeling mishap Thursday in Heeia Bay in Keauhou, North Kona.

Teoruo Isobe of Kanagawa Kane, Japan, was found floating face down in the water about 1:20 p.m., Big Island police reported. Fire rescue personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Isobe and took him to the Kona Community Hospital, where he died at 12:55 a.m. Friday. Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
