Speeder is indicted in
death of pedestrian

A 36-year-old man who was convicted for causing another driver serious bodily injury in a 1992 traffic accident has been indicted for killing a pedestrian 10 years later.

Desmond Antonio was indicted yesterday on charges of second-degree negligent homicide in the death of James Kaliko on the H-3 on Dec. 16, 2002.

Antonio was allegedly racing with another car when he moved to the shoulder to avoid striking a slow-moving car and struck Kaliko instead, killing him.

"The suspect is a danger to the community and should not be driving anymore," said Deputy Prosecutor Vickie Kapp in seeking bail of $50,000.

Antonio has been convicted four times for speeding at 20 to 35 mph over the limit and also for driving without a license and no-fault insurance, and racing on the highway.

His license was revoked for five years after the 1992 incident, in which he struck another car, injuring the other driver. He was ordered to spend 60 days in jail as a condition of five years' probation. He completed probation in November 1998.
