Fun run cancelledThe Honolulu Symphony Fun Run scheduled for Oct.10 has been cancelled.the Symphony Guild started the Fun Run more than 20 years ago as the first event of its kind. However, as fund-raising runs have spread throughout the community, the organization is seeking a fresh direction for its fund-raiser.
Happy Hapai DayThe Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Hawai'i is inviting pregnant women and their families, providers and the public to participate in Healthy and Hapai Day 2004 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, one of the Women's Health Month activities.The event takes place at the Hawaii State Capitol Auditorium, first floor-chamber level, with displays and hapai-oriented education and information offered in support pregnant women and their families. Talks scheduled throughout the day (times are subject to change) are: 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. -- "Preparing for Pregnancy: The Top Ten Things I Wish I Had Known," presented by Tamara Gerrard and Christine Chun. 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. --"What Women Need to Know About Nutrition During Pregnancy," presented by Hawaii WIC, Wendy Holifield. 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. -- "Pregnancy and Fatherhood," presented by Hawaii Coalition for Dads, Brian Kanno. 11 to11:30 a.m. -- "Preparing for Baby: Essential Equipment and Safety Concerns," presented by the Keiki Injury Prevention Coalition/Consumer Product Safety, Danielle Kessenger and David Cheng. 11:30 a.m. to noon --"Role of Doulas in Labor and Delivery," presented by The Doula Network of Hawaii 12:30 to 1 p.m. -- "Smoking and Pregnancy," presented by Kalihi Palama Health Center, Ana Jimenez. 1 to 1:30 p.m. -- "Child Birth Preparation: What are Your Options," presented by Alexa Sueda, OB/GYN Resident, ACOG Hawaii Sectio. 1:30 to 2 p.m. -- "Perinatal Depression," presented by Dr. Rosemary Adam Terem. 2 to 2:30 p.m. -- "Healthy Benefits of Breastfeeding Baby," presented by Dr. Sylvia Pager. 2:30 to 3 p.m. -- "Healthy Exercises to Ease Labor and Delivery." Tsuchidana showcaseIn his first solo show in more than 15 years, artist Harry Tsuchidana returns to the gallery with the exhibition "Harry Tsuchidana: Gemini, Monkey, Kumamoto Ken," the latest art exhibition at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i.The exhibition features some of Tsuchidana's recent paintings, including several pieces from his "Stage" series, which he has worked on since 1979. He said the show's title reflects his personality. "All three are quite playful," he said. Trained at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., Tsuchidana moved to New York in 1956, where he met fellow Hawaii artists Satoru Abe, Jerry Okimoto, Bob Ochikubo, Isami Doi and Tadashi Sato. Since 1955, Tsuchidana has showed in galleries and exhibitions locally and on the mainland. The show will open with a 5 to 7:30 p.m. reception tomorrow; the exhibit will continue 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays, through Oct. 22. At the reception, the public will be able to meet the artist and enjoy a jazz performance by Sandy Tsukiyama de Oliveira and friends. Admission is free. Fit for the Cure at NMWomen are invited to take part in a Fit for the Cure event at the Neiman Marcus store in Ala Moana, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 29.For every woman who participates in a free bra fitting at a Fit for the Cure event, Wacoal America, Inc., will donate $1 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. During the event, Wacoal's fit consultants will properly fit women in bras from Wacoal, Donna Karan Intimates and DKNY Underwear. It's estimated that eight out of 10 women are wearing the wrong-sized bra. Wacoal will also donate an additional $2 for every bra sold from its Awareness Bra Collection during the fit event and during the month of October. Wacoal fitters also educate women about the advantages of early detection and good breast health. In addition, every woman who receives a complementary bra fitting during a Fit for the Cure event will receive a commemorative Awareness Angel pin. The pins serve as a tribute to loved ones impacted by breast cancer, and is a visible reminder for women to take care of their health as well as join in the fight against breast cancer. Inspiring independenceAn artists' reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at 1132 Bishop St. will celebrate the fall exhibition "Ku'o Ko'a (Independence)," an inspirational show of artwork by students of the Easter Seals Youth Services Program.The work was created through an art enrichment program at Easter Seals Makiki facility. The show will be on view through Oct. 29.
