Campbell positions itself
as state D-II challenger

Watch out for Campbell.

The Sabers dropped to the OIA White (Division II) Conference in football this year and are rolling up some big wins.

A year ago, the team started slow, but came on strong with victories over Waipahu and Waianae to finish 2-6 overall and 2-5 in the OIA Red West Conference.

"Every game, we progressed last year," coach Tumoana Kenessey said. "We also lost to Leilehua by one and to Nanakuli by two.

"This year, the kids are bringing it on and carrying it forward, and they're responding to their hard offseason training."

The Sabers (4-1, 4-0) are coming off a 45-0 rout of Radford in a game that many considered to be a litmus test between two White Conference challengers.

With the victory, Campbell proved it's a legitimate contender for the state's second Division II tournament.

Aiea, now up in the Red West Conference, won the inaugural event last year.

"We're progressing slowly but surely," Kenessey added. "For us, it's important to control the clock and keep the defense fresh."

The Sabers' only loss was a 2-0 defensive affair against Waianae.

Campbell has a bye this week and visits Waipahu (3-2, 3-1) for a key conference game Oct. 1.

Back in the coaching ranks: La Pietra hired Jack Danilewicz as its new basketball coach, according to athletic director Katy Bourne.

"We're excited to have him," Bourne said. "He brings enthusiasm and young energy and I think he'll grow right along with our young team."

Danilewicz is also a freelance writer for the Star-Bulletin and he also works as a counselor advocate for Hale Kipa, Inc.

He last coached at Alan B. Shepard High School in the Chicago area in 1993. He also played for the school in the mid-1980s.

"I was looking for the right opportunity to get into coaching again," Danilewicz said.

Danilewicz's stepfather is Len Scaduto, who is on coach Riley Wallace's staff at the University of Hawaii. Scaduto is a member of the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame.

A year ago under coach Tim Shepherd, La Pietra went 7-5 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II.

Athletes beware: Most high school athletes know they can jeopardize their eligibility and amateur status by taking money for a performance. But some find out the hard way.

A high school bowler on Oahu won $80 in prize money while bowling in an outside league.

The bowler is no longer eligible to compete in any sport at the high school level and may also be ineligible to participate in college sports.

Hawaii's unbeatens: Seven football teams across the state are unbeaten after five weeks of competition -- Mililani (5-0), Leilehua (4-0), Iolani (4-0), Hilo (4-0), Lahainaluna (4-0-1), Kamehameha (3-0-1) and Baldwin (2-0-2).

Red Raiders move up: Kahuku jumped one spot to No. 8 in the West Region of the Tony Poll national football rankings.

The Red Raiders have a bye this week. They shut out Farrington 41-0 last week and face windward rival Castle on Oct. 2.

Kahuku isn't ranked in the West Region of the USA Today Super 25.

Na Alii seek coaches: Aiea is looking for boys and girls tennis coaches and a girls basketball coach.

Interested applicants can send resumes to: Aiea High School athletic department, 98-1276 Ulune St., Aiea, HI 96701.

Final numbers in: The Oahu Interscholastic Association's cross-country invitational on Sept. 11 earned $5,500 for the Lanakila Rehabilitation Center.

Volleyball change: The site for the Oct. 15 Aiea-Mililani volleyball match has been switched to Mililani from Aiea.
