Oktober breakfastOctober looms, which means Oktoberfest.The Ala Moana Hotel is preparing for its annual celebration, Oct. 5 to 10, featuring the usual German food, polkas and beer. For a preview, visit the Saturday Farmers' Market at Kapiolani Community College this weekend. Ala Moana Hotel chef Ryan Day will be serving up breakfast of Tyrolean Omelettes and German-style Pancakes. Music and costumed staff will add to the atmosphere. The farmers' market is open from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the KCC parking lot off Diamond Head Road. Vendors this week will include the Hawaiian Vanilla Co. Call the Hawaii Farm Bureau, 848-2074.
Chefs change channel"Two Skinny Chefs," the cooking show starring Chai Chaowasaree and Beth-Ann Nishijima has moved from KGMB/CBS to KHON/Fox.The show airs at 5 p.m. Sundays, just before KHON's long-standing "Hawaii's Kitchen." Actually, lovers of local cooking shows can bulk up on Sundays -- Hawaiian Electric's "The Electric Kitchen" airs at 4:30 p.m. on KITV/ABC.
Chinatown toursCooking instructor Walter Rhee is offering a series of Chinatown tours through the Lyon Arboretum.The Cook's Tour of Chinatown Markets covers fresh produce, fish and specialty ingredients available in Chinatown's shops. Lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant follows. Tours take place 10 a.m. to noon on the first Saturday of the month -- Oct. 2, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4. Cost is $15, not including lunch.
