Boogaard named tournament MVP

University of Hawaii junior Susie Boogaard was named MVP of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Invitational yesterday.

Boogaard had 35 kills in the tournament, including 21 in a win over UC Irvine on Saturday night. Teammates Alicia Arnott and Kanoe Kamana'o joined Boogaard on the all-tournament team.

Also making the all-tournament team were Camille Leffall and Angie Pressey of No. 14 California and Ashlie Hain and Amanda Vasquez of UC Irvine. Vasquez graduated from Moanalua High.

The Rainbow Wahine finished the tournament 2-0. Yesterday, California defeated UC Irvine 30-24, 30-23, 30-27 behind Pressey's 18 kills. UC Irvine came into the tournament undefeated and left with two losses.

Recruiting expert to speak at Kapolei

Rick Wire, author of "The Student-Athlete & College Recruiting," will speak at Kapolei High School tonight at 7:30.

Wire is considered an expert in the field of athletic scholarships and recruiting. His program is designed to educate student-athletes and their parents on the recruiting process. The seminar is free and open to the public.

Libadisos named Player of the Year

Dylan Libadisos of Kapolei was named the 2004 Western Regional American Legion Baseball Player of the Year.

With the honor, Libadisos earned a $1,000 scholarship from the American Legion and a $1,000 Gatorade Leadership Award. He graduated with a 3.2 GPA from Aiea High School this past year and is currently attending Highland Community College in Kansas.
