winning games

There have been a number of game-winning goals scored by Hawaii players in the first three weeks of the college season.

Satoshi Mitsuda (Punahou) scored his first collegiate goal Wednesday in Boston College's 2-1 victory over Boston University. Mitsuda also had the game-winning assist in No. 6 BC's 3-1, season-opening win over Brown.

That same day, Colby Ayonom turned the trick off a corner kick in Linfield's 3-0 win over Willamette in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams. The win stopped the Wildcats' four-game losing streak, the longest in five seasons.

Duke Hashimoto (Iolani) leads the Southern Methodist Mustangs (3-0-1), ranked anywhere from No. 6 to No. 16 in the four collegiate polls, with four points. The junior striker has a goal and two assists.

Hashimoto was named to the Saint Louis Nike Classic all-tournament team last week won by SMU with victories over Saint Louis and Cincinnati.

Hashimoto scored the lone goal in the 1-0 overtime win over the Billikens. His one-on-one 10-yard shot beat goalkeeper Pat Disbennett at 94:50.

Laura Wilson, a senior striker from Hilo, notched the only goal at 17:31 as the Marymount University Saints of Arlington, Va., won the Shenandoah Women's Shootout on Sept. 5 with the 1-0 win over the host Hornets. The Saints, an NCAA Division III team, are 6-0-0.

Bobby Self, a senior midfielder from Kaiser, scored the winning goal for the Saint Michael's (Vt.) Purple Knights in a 5-0 win over in-state rival Johnson State on Sept. 2

Adria Campbell (Punahou), a sophomore striker has scored two goals for SMU's women's team (3-1-1), ranked as high as No. 16 in the Soccer Buzz poll.

Kami Kapaku (Baldwin) has started all four matches for Oregon (1-2-1). The freshman striker leads the Ducks in minutes played with 336. She has taken eight shots, put six on goal, but has yet to score.

Mele French (Mililani) has started two of four matches. The junior striker has one goal.

Nicole Garbin (Baldwin), a redshirt junior striker has not played so far. The 2001 Star-Bulletin Player of the Year suffered a knee injury during spring practice and her availability this fall is questionable.

Kasey Chun scored her first goal of the season as the Pacific U. Boxers opened Northwest Conference play with a 3-1 victory over George Fox on Wednesday. Chun is a senior defender from Maryknoll.

Injury bug strikes

Sarah Takekawa (Kailua) tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left leg in a match against Cal Poly on Sept. 7. The St. Mary's senior midfielder is done for the season and had surgery Thursday.

Takekawa might be eligible for a redshirt year, but is on track to graduate in May and plans to attend medical school. She will weigh her options during rehab.

Keo Eaton (Baldwin) made the San Francisco Dons as a walk-on this year, but tore the ACL in her left leg in the second session of the first day of practice. A decision on whether to have surgery has not been made.

Eaton is the younger sister of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine senior Kalena Eaton.
