A CHANT FOR CHUNG-HOON

Kimo Kahoano performed an ancient Hawaiian chant yesterday during the commissioning ceremony of the USS Chung-Hoon on Ford Island at Pearl Harbor. The Chung-Hoon is the newest and most-advanced guided-missile destroyer to be placed in active service. It is named after Rear Adm. Gordon P. Chung-Hoon of Hawaii, who was assigned to the USS Arizona when it was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941.

8 charged in Kailua-Kona drug raid
Eight people have been charged with drug counts after a raid on a Kailua-Kona welding shop Thursday, Big Island police said.
Another six people were arrested in the bust, but were released pending an investigation.
Federal and Big Island law enforcement raided a welding shop on Kaiwi Street in Kailua-Kona at about 12:50 a.m. Thursday. Police said they found crystal methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and firearms at the business.
Four cars were also seized.
Those charged were:
» Stephen K. Murata, 40, of Holualoa, with three counts of promoting dangerous drugs, three counts of illegal possession of drug paraphernalia and other charges. Murata is being held in lieu of $12,500 bail.
» Jaime Martinez-Sanchez, 33, of Kailua-Kona, was arrested and charged with three counts each of promoting dangerous drugs and illegal possession of drug paraphernalia. Martinez-Sanchez is being held in lieu of $6,000 bail.
» Danielle Kaneao, 19, of Kailua-Kona, with three counts each of promoting dangerous drugs and illegal possession of drug paraphernalia. His bail has been set at $6,000.
» Alisha D. Brenneman, 24, of no permanent address, with one count each of promoting dangerous drugs and illegal possession of drug paraphernalia. Brenneman is being held in lieu of $4,000 bail.
» Brandon T. Halmas, 24, of Kailua-Kona, with one count each of promoting dangerous drugs and illegal possession of drug paraphernalia. Halmas' bail is $4,000.
» James R. Vanderhoek, 49, of Captain Cook, with counts of promoting dangerous drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bail is $4,100.
» Dale H. Beimes, 43, Kailua-Kona, with one count each of promoting dangerous drugs, illegal possession of drug paraphernalia and promoting detrimental drugs. Beimes was released after posting $4,250 bail.
» Pohaku B. Veriato, 25, of Captain Cook, with one count each of promoting dangerous drugs and illegal possession of drug paraphernalia. His bail was $2,000.
