Daytime is for driving and
nighttime is for acting

A BIG MOVE IN RADIO: The debut of Chris Riser and Sista Sherry this week as the new "morning drive" team on Krater 96 is also great news for local theater fans. Sherry's long-running evening gig at Krater forced her to shelve a promising career as a stage actress several years ago, but her well-deserved promotion to prime time now leaves her evenings free and her theater options open. Count yourself lucky if you caught Sherry starring as "queen-sized princess" Sandralene Ferreira in Kumu Kahua's 1998 production of "Da Mayah," the first and best play to date by local playwright Lee Cataluna ...

INTERESTING PEOPLE: Steel guitarist Jeff Au Hoy has been getting plenty of press since he was discovered by the Brothers Cazimero and rightly so, but it shouldn't be long before Hawaii is talking about his vocal talent. Yes, he also sings falsetto ... The impact of "The Ride," Nathan Kurosawa's locally produced film about a cocky contemporary surfer who travels through time and is befriended by Duke Kahanamoku, continues to ripple through Hawaii after the film's five-week run at Restaurant Row. Weldon Kekauoha has been meeting people who recognize him as "Blackie," his role in the film, rather than as a recording artist ... You'd never know from her performance as "Maria" in Army Community Theatre's excellent revival of "West Side Story," but Katherine E. Mills is only 17. She'll hit "the big one-eight" in November ... Sondra Barker is ending her business relationship with Ian Fernandez to go solo with her own promotion company, Empyrean Productions. Barker and her new company debut with "The Totally Tubular '80s Party" at the Hanohano Room a week from tomorrow ...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: To Jennifer Lehua Barber, Gaylord Holomalia and Taiwan-based rock star David Wong, all celebrating tomorrow ... fashion maven Joey Calderone (Saturday), Kyra Poppler (Sunday), Carlos Barbosa (Monday), and Henry Kapono, Donald P. McDiarmid Jr. and Jerome Koko (Tuesday) ...

CONGRATULATIONS: To Tom Alexander and Volcano Percussion on taking first place in the musical instrument category this week at the Hawaii Forest Industry Association 12th annual Juried Wood Show. A set of mango wood congas and bongos valued at $3,750 won the judges' favor. The line has enjoyed increased visibility outside the Big Island since signing an endorsement deal with percussionist Rolando Sanchez. ...
