Odelius, Kyono tied for fifth at McGuire InviteALBUQUERQUE, N.M. >> Georgia led and Hawaii was in 12th place after yesterday's action in the Dick McGuire Invitational women's golf tournament at the University of New Mexico.Sara Odelius shot a 73 for a two-day total of 145 to lead UH. She is in a tie with Kauai alumnus Rachel Kyono of Pepperdine and Brigham Young's Natalie Newren at fifth place, 1 under. Hawaii's Xyra Suyetsugu is at 75-75--150, 4 over, in a tie for 19th. Taketa wins title: Hilo Muni's Lance Taketa shot a 74 to earn a one-stroke victory over Waikele Golf Club's Scotty Kaneko yesterday at the Aloha Section PGA TaylorMade-adidas championship tournament for assistant pros at Ko Olina Golf Club. Taketa finished at 74-74--148 over the two-day tournament. He and Kaneko both qualified for the 2004 TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship next month in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Kahumoku among NCAA woman nomineesINDIANAPOLIS >> Three-time Hawaii volleyball All-American Lily Kahumoku is among 52 nominees for NCAA woman of the year.Other state winners include NCAA skiing champion Jennifer Delich of New Mexico; Rebecca Brakeley of NCAA Division III lacrosse champion Middlebury; Julie Culley of Rutgers, the new women's track coach at Loyola, Md.; Sigrid Aas of Alaska-Fairbanks, a U.S. and NCAA runner-up in skiing; Nicole Ohlde, rookie center for the WNBA Minnesota Lynx, of Kansas State. The 52 women -- one from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico -- represent 12 sports. Thirty are from Division I schools, with 11 each from Divisions II and III. A committee will select 10 finalists, and the national winner will be announced at the annual woman of the year dinner in Indianapolis on Oct. 31.
BYUH cross country breaks into Top 25Brigham Young-Hawaii's women's cross country team broke into the national rankings for the first time in school history, checking in at No. 25 in the NCAA Division II poll released yesterday.The Seasiders won their first two meets of the season, led by defending Division II national champion Chelsea Smith, who also won both events. BYUH freshman Diana Choi began her college career with a second and third place in her first two meets. Four other Seasiders have also scored points. HPU 10th, BYUH back in volleyball poll: Hawaii Pacific dropped one spot to No. 10 and BYUH bounced back into the CSTV/AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 women's volleyball poll today after a week's absence. The Seasiders are No. 24 with a 6-2 record. One of the losses was to No. 1 Nebraska-Kearney. HPU is 6-1, its only loss also to No. 1 UNK.
Outrigger wins Catalina Channel RaceThe Outrigger Canoe Club men's open crew won Sunday's 31-mile Catalina Channel Race by nearly five minutes.The nine-man crew finished the course from Catalina Island to Newport Beach in 3 hours, 52 minutes and 26 seconds. Tui Tonga was timed in 3:57.22 while Hawaii's Hui Nalu was third out of the 49 crews in 4:02.22. Anuenue of Hawaii finished second in the Masters 55 division in 4:56.34. In the women's race on Sunday, defending Na Wahine O Ke Kai champion Kai Opua placed third. The Big Island crew finished the 27-mile race in 4:38.30, third behind Newport Aquatic Center (4:23.08) and Offshore (4:33.26).
Women's triathlon at Kapiolani ParkThe 6th annual Na Wahine Sprint Triathlon, the only all female triathlon in Hawaii, will be held this Sunday at Kapiolani Park.The course includes a .75-kilometer swim, a 20-kilometer bike ride and a 5-kilometer run.
