Low-carb in a canLow-carb dieters now have some local flavors they can suck down: Aloha Maid, maker of the canned juice drinks, has come up with Island Lite, a line of drinks with 60 percent fewer carbohydrates and calories than its regular juices.Island Lite comes in the familiar flavors of orange, passion-orange, lilikoi and calamansi. Cook-off queenHawaii's recipe contest champion, Maui's Kristine Snyder, is in the running for another major prize: a $25,000 kitchen makeover from Redwood Creek Winery. The winery collected recipes nationwide and selected five regional finalists in its "Local Flavors of America" contest. Recipes were to reflect foods of the region and had to include a Redwood Creek wine. Snyder's recipe, for Sesame Ginger-Marinated Halibut with Spot Prawns and Cilantro Sauce, was selected as finalist for the northwest. She will participate in a cook-off in Washington, D.C., in December. Until then, however, the winery is collecting votes in a People's Choice Sweepstakes. Visit the Web site www.redwoodcreek.com, look over all five recipes and vote for what you think will taste best. All voters are entered into a drawing to win a Sub-Zero wine refrigerator. Voting deadline is Oct. 31. The finalist whose recipe draws the most votes wins a $500 gift certificate to Williams-Sonoma. Snyder has won the National Chicken Cooking Contest, the National Beef Cook-Off and was a finalist in the Pillsbury Bake-Off. Her success places her in the ranks of "contesters," a major player among regulars in national recipe competitions.
