Kamana'o named WAC player of the weekHawaii setter Kanoe Kamana'o was named the Western Athletic Conference women's volleyball Player of the Week yesterday.The sophomore averaged 14.31 assists per game in helping the Rainbow Wahine win the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Volleyball Challenge with wins over Southwest Missouri State, No. 17 Santa Clara and No. 3 UCLA. She recorded 60 assists and 18 digs in the upset of UCLA and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. The tournament victory also gave UH (6-0) a boost in the polls. The Wahine moved up to No. 7 in the USA Today/CSTV Top 25 Coaches Poll released yesterday, up from No .11 last week. Minnesota (7-1) moved into the top spot, Southern California (5-1) dropped to No. 2. Narkon earns PacWest honor: Western New Mexico volleyball player Liz Narkon of Honolulu was named the Pacific West Conference women's volleyball player of the week. The St. Francis graduate hit. 348 and recorded 69 kills to help the Mustangs (10-3) to four wins last week. She also had nine service aces, 35 digs and seven blocks. She had 20 kills and just one error in 31 attempts for a .613 hitting percentage against Embry-Riddle last Friday.
UH golf team in 12th placeUniversity of Hawaii golfer Sara Odelius shot a 1-under-par 72 to move into a five-way tie for seventh place after the first day of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.The Rainbow Wahine enter today's second round in 12th place in the team standings. UH carded a total of 13-over 305 yesterday.
Kaneko leads Assistant Pro tourneyScotty Kaneko of Waikele Golf Course shot a 71 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead into today's final round of the Aloha Section PGA Taylor Made-Adidas Assistant Professional Championship at Ko Olina Golf Club.Sheldon Sakamoto of Honolulu Country Club shot a 72. Shane Abe (Oahu C.C.) and Lance Taketa (Hilo Municipal G.C) were tied for third at 74.
