Rams ride Daniels to
win over Cougars
Radford junior running back Alex Daniels ran for 78 yards and put the game out of reach with a 4-yard touchdown run, his second of the night, as the host Rams beat Kaiser 23-21 in an OIA White game last night.
Daniels' TD gave Radford (3-0, 3-1 overall) an insurmountable 23-14 lead with 3:18 left in the game.
Kaiser's Shannon Wise did everything but sell popcorn, but it wasn't enough in a game that started slow but left the audience begging for more.
The Rams are tied with Campbell for first place in the conference.
Wise, a senior utility player, passed for 38 yards, ran for 73, scored a touchdown and tallied six tackles, three for sacks. Along with teammate Jared Maeda's 11 tackles, Wise kept the Cougars (1-2, 1-3) in the game.
At halftime, Radford led 3-2 off a 25-yard field goal by senior wide receiver Eric Venglar.
Things got exciting after intermission. The lead changed twice within a 14-second span near the end of the third quarter.
At the 2:50 mark in the third quarter, Kaiser senior quarterback Steven Pratt connected with senior wide receiver Matt Ching on an 88-yard touchdown pass to put Kaiser ahead 8-3.
But the euphoria was short-lived, as Radford junior defensive back Trevor Meldon returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. The score was 9-8 and it would be a lead the Rams would never relinquish.
After Daniels' second TD, the Cougars scored on another Pratt-to-Ching pass, this one for 7 yards with 27 seconds left.
But the ensuing on-side kick was recovered by the Rams.
