Bronson Ponciano-Ahue completed six straight passes in leading the No. 1 Kahuku Red Raiders to a lopsided 33-0 win last night over OIA Red East rival McKinley.
Ponciano-Ahue, a senior, threw for 91 yards and two touchdowns in only one half of work. He completed seven of 11 passes and had one interception.
"We were trying to roll, get our kids into the game and minimize our mistakes," Kahuku head coach Siuaki Livai said. "We just had a lot of penalties today. It's not good."
Despite Kahuku's 20-0 halftime lead, the game seemed much closer, as the Tigers were the beneficiaries of Kahuku penalties, including several of the 15-yard variety that kept McKinley's drives alive.
But the Red Raiders defense didn't allow the Tigers to score despite good field position on several drives. Kahuku recorded two interceptions thrown by quarterback Tilton Kaluna, who also lost a fumble. Kaluna was just 1-for-9 for 19 yards.
While the Red Raiders kept the Tiger ground attack in check for most of the game, McKinley running back Charles Seyer was able to collect 44 yards on 12 carries.
The Red Raiders spread the ball around, as 13 players ran the ball. The most productive were juniors Malosi Teo and Siaosi Lauhingoa, and senior Hyrum Moors. In the first half, Teo was Kahuku's main weapon on the ground, burning the Tiger defense for 39 yards on four carries. Lauhingoa added a 42-yard run up the middle that eventually led to one of two Kahuku touchdowns in the first quarter.
Kahuku started the scoring on a 26-yard touchdown run by Teo less than 3 minutes into the game.
