Local temples set to
celebrate High Holy Days

Members of the Oahu Jewish community will join Jews around the world in marking the special season known as the Days of Awe, which begins next week.

"Selichot," prayers for forgiveness, will be said at 8 p.m. today at Temple Emanu-El in preparation for the High Holy Days, which begin with Wednesday evening services.

Thursday is Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the year 5765 on the Hebrew calendar, which by tradition counts time since the creation of the world.

There are differences in the observance depending on whether a congregation practices Orthodox, Conservative, Traditional or Reform Judaism, but one ritual they will hold in common is the sounding of the shofar. Blowing the ram's horn during Rosh Hashanah is commanded in the Torah.

The 10-day period will end with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Although family and community meals are part of the observance, it is not a festival time, but a season to examine past deeds and seek God's forgiveness for sins.

When it comes time for prayers for the dead on the last day, Chabad Lubavitch of Hawaii will commemorate the victims of terrorism in the world today.

Services are planned at the following times and places:

Chabad Lubavitch of Hawaii, 735-8161. Services will be at the Waikiki Marriott Beach Hotel, 2552 Kalakaua Ave.

Advance reservations are required for the Wednesday community festival dinner. Tickets are $35 for adults and $20 for children, with reduced prices for kamaaina.
