Percussionist Okimoto stars in benefit concert
Award-winning percussionist Noel Okimoto will make music Sept. 26 in a Niu Valley concert to benefit future musicians.Okimoto's album "Ohana" was named the jazz album of the year at the Hawaii Music Awards and the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, and he was voted studio musician of the year. Okimoto's band includes Todd Yukumoto, saxophone, Dayton Arima, bass, and Dan Delnegro, piano.
The 7 p.m. event at Kilohana United Methodist Church, 5829 Mahimahi St., will benefit the Rita Thompson Music Scholarship offered by the church.
Also performing will be 2004 scholarship recipients drummer Casey Kawahara, Highlands Intermediate School eighth-grader, and pianists Mitchell Kuga, Moanalua High School senior, Evan Lin, Momilani Elementary School third-grader, and Blaise Tom, Saint Louis School eighth-grader.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students. For reservations, call 783-9060.
Information on the scholarship, offered to students of musical instruments and not limited to church members, is available from the church office. The scholarship is named for Rita Thompson, organist at the church for 25 years.
New ice cream store helps church's school
Hawaii's newest Cold Stone Creamery celebrates its grand opening tomorrow with clowns, face painting, ice cream samples and a benefit for First Assembly of God School.The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the new store in the Salt Lake Shopping Center on Ala Lilikoi Street.
First Assembly of God School, a Christian academy for children from preschool through high school, will receive $1 for every $1-off flier redeemed through the month. Fliers are available at First Assembly of God church, 836-2300.
The school plans to use the funds to benefit its sports program, including transportation, coaches, facility rentals and uniforms.
