[ STATE HOUSE ]

30
Alewa-Kalihi

Dennis A. Arakaki

Democrat

Age: 56 Job: Health planning consultant; currently full-time legislator

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

Lived in the district for over 40 years. Worked in the field of health, recreation and social services for over 25 years. Served on the neighborhood board for five years. Served as elected representative for 18 years.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district, and what would you do about it?

Infrastructure issues of roads, water, sewage. City and County needs to take ownership and responsibility to maintain said issues. Education -- students in the schools in the district are below standard.

Do you support or oppose Gov. Linda Lingle's plan to break up the statewide Board of Education? Explain.

Not at this time. There is already an inequity in communities in terms of parental involvement and resources. Local boards would tilt the inequity further. Student-weighted formulas and lower class-size ratios will make a bigger impact. ...

Diana P. Perrells

Republican

Age: 62 Job: Queen's Hospital retiree Past: I previously ran in 1998 and am a Republican Party member.

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

I've lived in Kalihi for 30-plus years, and I'm disappointed in how our elected leaders are ignoring growing problems facing the community. I would ... like to add my voice to the ... Republicans demanding real change in the Legislature.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district, and what would you do about it?

Too much traffic when exiting Kalihi Valley to enter the freeways. An alternative route out would be a good choice.

Do you support or oppose Gov. Linda Lingle's plan to break up the statewide Board of Education? Explain.

Yes, I support our governor's plan. Our present school system has been proven incapable of responding effectively to the needs of everyone who depend on it. Decisions must be made closer to the schools and communities directly affected by those decisions.
