Race for riceTrade a bag of rice for a smoothie at Jamba Juice locations in Hawaii all month.The "Race for Rice" helps the Hawaii Foodbank gear up for the holidays. Last year's campaign collected 25,528 pounds of rice. To collect a coupon for a smoothie, bring 20 pounds of rice (one bag, two 10-pound bags or four 5-pound bags) to any Jamba Juice location through Sept. 30. The Foodbank feeds 118,000 people each week through its member agencies.
Culinary classesThe Rehabilitation Center of the Pacific: Two healthy-cooking demonstrations are offered this month -- low fat/low cholesterol on Monday and low sodium on Sept. 30. Both classes run 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Frear Cafeteria. Cost is $30 each, which includes lots of food sampling. Reservations are required; call 566-3780.Vintage Program in Wine Appreciation and Service: Alan Jahns of JMD Beverages teaches an introduction to wines in six Thursday night sessions, 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 16 to Oct. 21 at the JMD Educational Center, 99-1269 Iwaena St., Aiea. The course will cover grape-growing and wine-making, plus an overview of wine regions, grape varieties, interpretation of labels and classifications and wine service. Tasting sessions are included.
