Rainbow Wahine move up to No. 11A 3-0 start to the season earned the University of Hawaii women's volleyball team a No. 11 ranking in the USA Today/CSTV poll released yesterday.UH moved up two spots in the poll after winning the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic with wins over Eastern Washington, San Diego and Arizona. USC, Nebraska, UCLA, Florida and Minnesota are the top five teams in the poll. The Rainbow Wahine host the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Volleyball Challenge this week. UH plays Southwest Missouri State on Thursday, No. 17 Santa Clara on Friday and No. 3 UCLA on Saturday.
Sea Warriors top South Dakota StateFlavia Brakling recorded 20 kills and Nadica Karleusa added 17 to lead the Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team to a 3-1 win over South Dakota State on Sunday.The Sea Warriors (6-1) hit .310 in their 30-17, 28-30, 30-17, 30-26 victory SDSU (1-3). Middle blocker Barbara Martin was the third option for HPU setter Vera Oliveira, knocking down 13 kills on 25 attempts and helping Oliveira dish out 52 assists. The Sea Warriors get a week off before traveling to Laie for their first meeting of the season with Brigham Young-Hawaii Sept. 14.
Seasiders upset No. 13 PacificPeter Caley had nine saves as the No. 17 Brigham Young-Hawaii men's water polo team rallied to beat No. 13 Pacific 9-7 yesterday in Laie.Vanja Kalabic had three goals for the Seasiders, who trailed 5-3 at halftime and beat the Tigers for the second time in three days. BYUH hosts top-ranked Stanford at 7 p.m. on Friday.
