Time to submit listings for holiday eventsIt's September, so that means Christmas will be here in two weeks, or at least it always seems that way -- the closing months of the year moving along at triple the speed compared to the first nine months. As usual, a whole spate of craft fairs and events will take place between now and mid-December, and we wouldn't want to send you out into the jungle of holiday shopping ill-prepared. So here are some calendar deadlines for our holiday lists. Don't worry if you don't yet have your act together (we understand perfectly). We'll always have room for late additions in smaller weekly calendars.
» Craft fairs: Due Sept. 15Answer those basic journalism questions when you submit your listings, as in when, where, what and who you gonna call for more information? If you have any photos of past events, send those along also. We'll accept your duplicate photos (none will be returned), slides or JPEGs. Send the details, including your name and phone number, to Today Section, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 500 Ala Moana, Suite 7-210, Honolulu, HI 96813. Specify craft fairs, Halloween or Christmas. You can also e-mail the information to features@starbulletin.com.
Chinese Film FestivalHere is the list of films to be shown:
Wednesday and Thursday: "Zhou Yu's Train" (review to run Wednesday) Sept. 15: "Cala, My Dog!" ("Ka La Shi Tiao Gou") -- In the mid-1990s the Beijing government issued a decree to reduce the number of stray dogs roaming the city. When Lao Er's wife walks the family dog without a permit, the dog is confiscated and scheduled to be destroyed if Lao Er cannot pay an expensive fine. This winner of five Chinese Film Media Awards shows the struggle of an ordinary worker to reclaim his pet, and his dignity in the face of overwhelming bureaucracy. Plays at 1 p.m.; repeats at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 16. Sept. 15: "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" ("Shao Lin San Shih Liu Fang") -- Starring one of the grand masters of martial arts cinema, Gordon Liu (Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" films were a tribute to his work), this film features some of the most memorable images of kung fu training ever conceived. Liu stars in this Shaw Brothers classic as a novice who progresses from victimhood to spiritual and martial arts enlightenment. Plays at 7:30 p.m.; repeats at 1 p.m. Sept. 16.
