Torres, Sua break
through for Kailua

OIA RED EAST
Yesterday's results

Kailua's backfield combination of Damien Torres and Kekoa Sua would only be contained for so long.

After being bottled up by the Roosevelt defense for much of the first half, the Surfriders backs exploded for four touchdowns in the second to spur Kailua to a 36-24 victory over the Rough Riders last night.

Torres picked up 128 of his 222 rushing yards on two consecutive TD carries, erasing a 16-3 Roosevelt lead and sending Kailua to a win in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East Conference opener for both teams.

"I try to be a leader and motivate the team to do a good job, so I guess it worked," Torres said. "We stepped it up and came through with the victory."

Torres scored on runs of 38 and 90 yards on back-to-back carries in the third quarter and Sua took a screen pass and raced 57 yards for another TD in the fourth period. Torres added a 34-yard scoring dash and Kailua linebacker Hogan Paleafei returned a fumble 65 yards to put the game out of reach.

"Those are the people we have to rely on and they came through," Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich said of his running-back tandem.

"If the offensive line just gives them a crack they're going to exploit it. There were a couple of times where there was not much of a hole and they still chewed up some yardage."

In what has become a familiar script for Rosolowich, the Surfriders started slow before blowing past their opponent in the second half.

Kailua aided Roosevelt's cause with nine penalties for 75 yards in the first half. The Rough Riders picked up 30 yards on Kailua penalties on their opening series and scored on Rudy Artuyo's 10-yard scramble around the left side.

Following a Kailua field goal, Artuyo lobbed a 25-yard scoring pass to David Rivers, giving the Rough Riders a 14-3 lead at halftime.

The Rough Riders added to the lead early in the third quarter when La'akea Moikeha blocked a punt by Sua, who recovered the ball in the end zone for a safety.

That's when Torres took over.

After being held to 41 yards in the first half, Torres bolted through a hole on the right side of the line for his first TD.

An interception by Rathen McCabe gave Kailua the ball back and Torres busted through the left side for a 90-yard run, giving Kailua the lead for good.

Roosevelt dropped to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the OIA Red East. But coach Lester Parrilla was pleased with the Rough Riders' effort.

"All we asked of them this week was just to battle and they gave us a battle," Roosevelt coach Lester Parrilla. "Were OK. We just have to mend some things, see what happens and see what we can do better next time."

Kamehameha-Big Island 42, Ka'u 6: The Warriors remained undefeated with a victory over the Trojans.

Koa Aiwohi's interception return and Reese Alnas' 71-yard kickoff return gave Kamehameha-Big Island a 13-6 lead after the first quarter. The Warriors extended their lead to 42-6 at halftime and both teams failed to score for the remainder of the game.

Lahainaluna 6, Baldwin 6: Nahiku Phillips intercepted a pass at midfield and ran it in for a touchdown to lead the Lunas to a tie with the Bears.

Phillips made the interception with 4 minutes left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 6. But the Lunas were penalized for excessive celebration and given a 15-yard penalty on the extra-point kick, which was missed.

T.J. Kuahine scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter, but the extra-point kick was shanked to the right.
