Fans jam Waikiki for Hawaii;
show bows tonight on KHNL
Waikiki Beach was jammed for the premiere of "Hawaii" Sunday evening. The program bows tonight at 7 on KHNL. Mainland media hit town for the show and the Halekulani's Peter Shaindlin invited the visitors to lunch at Orchids Sunday. At the evening showing, actress Aya Sumika was stunning in a $3,000 haute couture dress. Dapper actor Sharif Atkins wore designer duds, but he confessed his shoes were bought at Ross the day before for $24.95. He claimed they were designer shoes, though. Atkins was happy his family had flown in for the event. After the showing, the cast was limo'd to the nearby Aston Waikiki Beach for a party. But Peter Navy Tuiasosopo walked to the hotel and obliged fans who wanted autographs and photos. Tiva Aga plans to start a local fan club for the big actor. At the party, a guest was pushed into the hotel pool by a "friend." With friends like that who needs enemies? NBC's safety guy Ashley Johnson rushed to help the soaked damsel in distress, along with publicist Mona Wood, Aston's Matt Derby and others ...
Miss Hawaiis turn it on at Rumours
Miss Hawaii titleholders unleashed their talents Friday night at Rumours in a patriotic show, "Hit Parade: Miss Hawaiis' Salute to the '40s and '50s." The women wore military and nurses' uniforms to open the night with "God Bless America" and a sassy "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." Among
Bev Noa's hula numbers was her interpretation of "America the Beautiful," which was sung by
Candes Gentry and
Billie Takaki. Other dancers were
Kahau Christian, Debbie Nakanelua-Richards and
Marlene Schimmelfennig. Vocalists included
Erika Kauffman, Delfin Poaha, Jeannie Oliveira, Denby Dung, Cathy Foy-Mahi,
Olena Rubin and
Haunani Asing. B.J. Feldman, Claire Heen, Luana Alapa, Jennifer-Hera Pimmentel also took part in the show, a fund-raiser for
Yun Tau Zane scholarships. Erika, Billie, Candes and Cathy organized it all ...
