The contest was created by the Congressional ArtsCaucus 22 years ago to promote the arts across the nation. Tasani's artwork will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. She and her art teacher, Larry Taguba, received a free round trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the July 13 ceremony. >> Hawaii's students in grades 2 through 8 took top honors in the national academic talent search organized by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. Alison Chen and Stephen Kwong of Punahou School and Lucia Mocz of Mililani were recognized for scoring 700 to 800 points on the SAT math test before the age of 13. They other winners are: Fifth- and sixth-grade math: First-place winners were Benjamin C. Booher of Maemae Elementary School, Daniel So of Punahou School, Robert M. Stomski of Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Kellie P. Wo of Iolani School and Jonathan Woo of Maryknoll School; second place, Kaylin K. Tsukayama of Kamehameha Schools and Nolan M. Kamitaki of Waiakea High School on the Big Island. Fifth- and sixth-grade verbal: First place, Tyler L. Cundiff of Le Jardin Academy and Vladimir G. Bernstein of Iolani School; second place, Victoria S. Kim of Aina Haina Elementary and Amelia L. Harvey of Kamehameha Schools. Seventh and eighth-grade math: First place, Allison J. By Star-Bulletin staff LEEWARD OAHUPolice locate and catch escapee in WaianaeIn Waianae, police found a man who had escaped from a hospital and assaulted an officer this weekend.The suspect, 38, had originally been arrested for a contempt of court warrant on Saturday. However, police said while the suspect was being treated for injuries not related to his arrest at an area hospital, he escaped on foot, then assaulted an officer who tried to stop him. The officer later tried to locate the suspect but failed to do so. However, while police were investigating an unrelated case yesterday in Waianae, they located the escapee.
WAIKIKIWitnesses help catch robbery suspectWitnesses to a Waikiki robbery caught a 15-year-old male who allegedly took a woman's handbag yesterday.Police said the victim had been walking in Waikiki at about 5:30 p.m. when he grabbed her handbag and ran off. Several witnesses who saw the incident ran after the suspect and detained him for police. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of second-degree robbery.
NEIGHBOR ISLANDSBig Isle police arrest 3 after drug raid in HiloBig Island police arrested three men after a raid in Hilo on Friday.The first arrest was made during a search warrant executed at a Kaiwiki Road residence where police recovered 54.4 grams of crystal methamphetamine, or "ice," and 14.3 grams of crack cocaine. Officers also recovered $6,555 in cash. Police then arrested two more suspects at a Keaau address in Puna where they found four more grams of ice and other drug paraphernalia. Two of the suspects, Joel Castillo and Romualdo Bermudez, were later charged with drug offenses. Castillo is being held in lieu of $255,000 pending federal prosecution. Bermudez is being held in lieu of $4,000 bail and is being held at the Hilo police cellblock. The third suspect was released pending an investigation.
