Oahu team wins Babe Ruth World Series title

Reece Kiriu pitched a three-hit shutout to lead Oahu to an 8-0 win over Harris Township, Ind., yesterday in the championship game of the Babe Ruth Baseball 14-year-old World Series in Wilson, N.C.

The Hawaii team pounded out 10 hits and benefited from five Harris errors to win the World Series title.

Matthew Suiter gave Oahu a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning with an RBI single to score Landen Taga. Oahu was aided by three Harris errors to score five runs in the fifth inning. Oahu added two more runs in the sixth on singles by Kiriu and Zachary Coronas.

Kiriu made the lead stand up by striking out seven in a complete-game performance. Oahu went 4-0 in pool play last week and advanced to yesterday's championship game by beating Nash County, N.C. 2-1 on Friday. Taga scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the eighth inning.

UH assistants headline Quarterback Club

University of Hawaii assistant football coaches Ron Lee and Mouse Davis will be among the speakers at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda Ballroom.

Also scheduled to appear are Kalani girls volleyball coach Aven Lee and Russell Shimooka, host of OC16's June Jones Show.

Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m., the program starts at noon.

Vulcans win at Hawaiian Style Classic

Maite Ardies recorded 14 kills and 13 digs to lead the Hawaii-Hilo volleyball team to a 30-27, 30-18, 31-29 win over Mercyhurst College in the Hawaiian Style Classic yesterday at St. Andrews Priory gym.

Christina Cooley added 12 kills and nine digs for the Vulcans.

Hawaii Pacific got 10 kills and six digs from Nadica Karleusa to rout Humboldt State 30-14, 30-17, 30-16. The Sea Warriors later beat Mercyhurst 30-17, 30-18, 30-18.

BYUH splits: BYU-Hawaii lost to Cal State-Bakersfield 3-2 but rebounded to beat host Cal State-Monterey Bay 3-0 to close out the Otter Classic yesterday.

Cal State-Bakersfield ralllied to beat the Seasiders (3-1) 30-23, 27-30, 28-30, 30-28, 15-12. BYUH then beat CSMB 30-28, 30-25, 30-19.

University claims first in Okamoto Classic

University swept Pearl City 25-20, 25-15 to win the Gold Division of the Longy Okamoto Boys volleyball Classic yesterday at Aiea's gym.

University defeated Kapaa 25-21, 25-23 in the semifinals. Pearl City edged past Moanalua 21-25, 25-22, 16-14 to advance to the final. Mid-Pacific won the Silver Division championship.

Local boxers win silver

Brooks Jumawan and Colleen Loo of PearlSide Boxing Club won silver medals at the Ringside World Championships last week.

Jumawan, fighting in the 152-pound division, stopped his first-round opponent and won on points in the second round. He then lost a close decision in the final to take home the silver. Loo advanced to the title bout in the 106-pound class, but lost to three-time national champion Cheryl Houlihan of Massachusetts.
