Judge Dayna Dias to wed
Kapono Beamer Sept. 18
U.S. Immigration Judge Dayna Dias and entertainer Kapono Beamer, who first met when they were teenagers, will marry Sept. 18 at Kaumakapili Church. They lived across the street from each other near St. Francis Hospital when she was attending Kawananakoa Intermediate and he was a high school student at Kamehameha. "It took all these decades, from a smile to a wave, for us to really get together," Dayna said. "We don't want to say how many decades," she added with a laugh. "We found out we have so much in common from generations past -- me, always in law enforcement and him, with his music and composing." Judge Dayna is a 1980 graduate of UH Law School. Her jurisdiction is Hawaii, Guam and Lompoc Federal Penitentiary in California. Kapono is writing music for a new CD ...

Mapuana's art makes Leslie's eyes light up

Leslie Light knows what she likes. At the recent Academy of Arts Showcase art sale, Leslie was drawn to paintings of hula dancers by
Mapuana Schneider, who formerly danced hula with the
Kahauanu Lake Trio. Leslie said she has a painting at home that looked like Mapuana's work. Later in the evening she met the artist, who signs her paintings Mapuana. Mapu said there will be an exhibition of her art opening Sunday at Native Books/Na Mea Hawaii in Ward Warehouse. When Leslie returned home, she checked the signature on her painting and sure enough, it was signed Mapuana. Leslie got the painting at an Epiphany School auction 3 1/2 years ago, soon after arriving from Texas. As for not knowing earlier from the signature on her painting that it was a Mapuana, a smiling Leslie said, "I couldn't read Hawaiian when I first arrived here" ...
