Market day for kids

Children's activities are planned for this weekend's Saturday Farmer's Market at Kapiolani Community College.

From 8:30 to 10 a.m., kids can attend a Wrap Party, making tortilla wraps of locally made sausage and produce; listen to James McCarthy, a guitarist and storyteller; or pick up balloons, coloring books and healthy eating ideas.

Kids activities are free.

The market runs 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Call 848-2074.

KCC cooking classes

Kapiolani Community College begins three new cooking series next month. Registration runs three weeks in advance. Call 734-9211.

>> Grant Sato's Cooking Fundamentals classes cost $45 each and run 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays:

Thai Cuisine I: An introduction to Thai produce and spices is followed with instruction in creating curry paste and making a Thai-style meal, Sept. 18.

Low-Fat 30-Minute Meals: Use store-bought sauces and other items to make quick dinners, Sept. 25.

>> Nina Jarrett's Evening French Cooking Series classes cost $45 each and run 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays:

Amuse Bouche: Learn to make the one-bite treats served before the first course in fine restaurants; Sept. 13

Hors D'oeuvres and Canapes: Sept. 20

Entrees: Sept. 27

Desserts: Oct. 4

5-Ingredient Vegetarian Cooking: Alyssa Moreau teaches time-saving combinations; Sept. 18

Quick Family Meals: Moreau demonstrates simple, low-fat meals; Oct. 2

Farmer's Market Culinary Tour: Nina Jarrett leads a tour of the Saturday Farmer's Market, followed up with a cooking lesson; Nov. 6

Healthy Substitutes for Popular Entrees: Moreau teaches healthy main courses; Dec. 4

Maui lessons

Chef Beverly Gannon leads a "Cookin' in Kaahumanu" class, 1 p.m. Saturday at Macy's in Kahului. Gannon owns the Haliimaile General Store, Joe's in Wailea and Celebration's Catering.
