UH’s Porter shines
for Australia
ATHENS, Greece >> Team USA picked up its third straight gold medal but University of Hawaii player Stacey Porter doubled up on her glory yesterday.
Porter, Australia's designated player, not only earned a silver medal but also drove in the only run against the Americans in this Olympics. Porter's sixth-inning single brought home Sandra Allen from second. It was the first and only run allowed by the Americans in nine games, breaking the record of seven shared by the U.S., China and Australia at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
"I just went out there to get a hit and luckily got a hit to score the only run of the tournament against the USA," Porter said. "Lisa (American pitcher Fernandez) is a very, very good pitcher. She has been around for a long time and has a lot of experience. She was working on the inside part of the plate the whole time and we sort of could not get on to her but luckily my last at-bat I managed to turn on a pitch and get a hold of it."
Porter is scheduled to return to UH to complete her senior season this spring.
"Definitely, I am happy with silver," she said. "You always come in thinking that you can win gold. We got bronze at the last two so the bronze label is gone. For me to come in here at my first Olympics and get a silver medal I am stoked."
