Man critically injured in Aug. 15 crash diesA 20-year-old man who was critically injured Aug. 15 in an accident that police say was caused by at least two cars racing on the H-1 freeway died Friday at the Queen's Medical Center.The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office did not identify the victim yesterday, pending identification by family members. Police said the man was the 45th fatality on Oahu roads since the start of the year, compared to 52 at the same time last year. The accident occurred when the cars allegedly were racing in the Waianae-bound lanes of the freeway just before the Alexander Street onramp at about 5:57 a.m. Police said the victim, who was driving a black two-door Acura, attempted to overtake a silver Acura driven by a 19-year-old man. The black car collided with the silver car, which then veered right and struck a freeway barrier. The 19-year-old man and his 20-year-old passenger also sustained injuries in the accident, and were taken to the Queen's Medical Center.
By Star-Bulletin staff NEIGHBOR ISLANDSWoman dies in collision on Big IslandA 22-year-old woman died Friday night in a car collision on Highway 11 in Captain Cook that also left two others injured.Big Island firefighters said the accident happened just south of the highway's 87-mile marker at about 9:18 p.m. when a sport utility vehicle rammed head-on into a pickup truck. A 19-year-old man, the driver of the pickup, was thrown from his vehicle and taken to an area hospital with multiple injuries. Firefighters used the jaws of life to free the driver of the SUV, a 22-year-old woman. She also was transported to an area hospital. Her passenger, also a 22-year-old woman, died at the scene. Police were still investigating the accident last night and whether excessive speed or alcohol were factors. The death was the 28th traffic fatality of the year on the island.
