Brunch on the Beach
honors Kahanamoku

While some are at home watching the Olympics, those at Brunch on the Beach will be honoring Hawaii's own Olympian Duke Paoa Kahanamoku from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

The monthly outdoor Hawaiian cafe on Kalakaua Avenue will feature free entertainment, plenny local grinds for purchase and a Duke Kahanamoku display booth with commemorative T-shirts and memorabilia. To coincide with the event, there will also be surf polo, waterman challenge and longboard surfing competitions at Waikiki beach.

Food booths will be set up at the Kaiulani and Liliuokalani avenue ends of Kalakaua Avenue, with some of Waikiki's finest chefs offering a large selection of breakfast treats, entrees and desserts. For $3, purchase the likes of Belgian waffles with banana butter and sugared strawberries from Tiki's Grill and Bar. For $5, sample a kalua pig sandwich from the Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki, or for $6 try the Hawaii Prince Hotel's crab hash Benedict on brioche with poached egg, lobster sauce and home-fried potatoes.
