'Under a Pearl Moon' fashion show in KapoleiRecent Honolulu Community College graduate Kiniokahokuloa "Kini" D Zamora will stage a fashion show at Kapolei Community Park at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, with seating from 6 p.m.The event, entitled "Experience an Evening Under a Pearl Moon," is intended to introduce the young designer to the community. It took him six months to come up with the designs ranging from swimwear to casual, cocktail and evening wear, and a plus line, all inspired by pearls and rainbows. The park is at 91-1111 Kamaaha Loop, and the show is free although donations are welcome.
Creme de la Creme fashions in WaikikiTickets are available for the Creme de la Creme Fashion Show fund-raiser taking place Sept. 19 at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel Hawaii Room to benefit Bishop Museum.Featured will be new designs by Jeanie Chun, of Jean Michael USA, and Jacqueline de Michel, in three theatrical segments: "Une Nuit Elegance" (evening wear), "Art to Wear" (hand-painted special occasion apparel) and "Victorian Collaboration" (muumuu in elegant lace). The show will feature local celebrities as models, and guests will also enjoy lunch, boutique sales and prize giveaways. Aloha Friday concertThe newly restored Mission Memorial Auditorium on the Civic Center grounds, adjacent to Honolulu Hale, is now the setting for free monthly concerts featuring top Hawaiian entertainers and performers.Tomorrow's 6 p.m. concert will showcase Halau Na Mamo O Pu'uanahulu, under the direction of kumu hula Sonny Ching. The halau, which counts Miss Aloha Hula 2004 Natasha Mahealani Akau and Miss Aloha Hula 2003 Jennifer Oyama among its members, took several honors at the 2004 Merrie Monarch competition, and the halau's keiki, adult and kupuna classes will perform. Also performing at 7 p.m. will be Roy Sakuma's ukulele students. Sakuma created the annual Ukulele Festival that has been delighting audiences since 1970. The event took place recently at Kapiolani Bandstand. Seating is limited to the first 350 guests, so arrive early. Doors open at 5 p.m. Free parking is available at the Civic Center parking structure, with entrances off Alapai and Beretania streets. Future concert dates are Sept. 17, Oct. 15 and Nov. 19. Warm up for 'Idol'Central YMCA is hosting its own "YMCA Idol" competition for budding songbirds from 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday at the Ocean Club at Restaurant Row.The fund-raiser to benefit Y programs might be just the place to test your singing talents before the next round of "American Idol" competitions. It's far better to be judged by a forgiving hometown crowd than a national audience and judges like Simon Cowell. Contestants have a chance to win a five-day, four-night Las Vegas trip, neighbor island trip or dinner for two. Register for the competition at www.islandidol.org or in person at Central YMCA, 401 Atkinson Drive. There will be celebrity judges, free pupus, door prizes of trips and spa packages, a performance by Frank De Lima and an appearance by Miss Hawaii 2004 Olena Rubin.
