A sake celebrationIf sake brings you joy, your time of ultimate happiness is near.The fourth annual Joy of Sake celebration takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 27, serving up more than 140 types of sake, alongside appetizers designed to best show them off. The Joy of Sake, held at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, is the largest sake tasting held outside Japan. The event moves on after Hawaii to San Francisco and New York. More than 2,500 sake lovers are expected to attend all three events, with a portion of the proceeds going toward the Takao Nihei Memorial Fund, honoring the man who developed early techniques for making sake from California rice. Tickets are $65, with $15 going to the cultural center's education programs. Call 945-7633. Macy's Ala Moana hosts a free preview at 5 p.m. tomorrow in the fourth-floor kitchen Bamboo Restaurant and sake expert Chris Pearce will offer samples of sakes and sake-friendly appetizers.
Birthday burgersCelebrate the 100th birthday of the burger from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at Times Supermarket on King Street. Sterling Silver Premium Meats will be serving up free hamburgers to the first 1,000 people.To mark the burger's centennial (it was first served at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair). Sterling Meats conducted an online poll in seven cities to determine how America likes its burgers. Honolulu was one of the cities polled in "Burger Decision 2004." Out of 177 respondents from Honolulu, it was determined that we prefer our burgers on white buns with bacon, tomato, ketchup, mayonnaise and iceberg lettuce, plus grilled onions when we can get them. Fewer people opt for mustard, raw onions and cheese. One person said he likes mint jelly. Respondents were also asked who makes the best burger in town, and the greatest number, 28 percent, picked Teddy's Bigger Burger. For more survey results, visit www.burgerbirthday.com.
Special eventsSaturday Farmer's Market: Glenn Tanoue of Tropics Fish will hold a demonstration on how to cook moi this weekend at the Kapiolani Community College market. Hours are 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the KCC parking lot. This week, the Hawaii Prince Hotel sells a breakfast of malassadas and a Breakfast Wrap made with North Shore Cattle Co. Portuguese sausage.
