4 UH faculty
receive civic award

Four are honored for
strengthening ties to the community

Four University of Hawaii faculty members were selected as recipients for an award for their outstanding service to the community.

University of Hawaii Roberta Lynn Brashear, Kathy Ferguson, David A. Krupp and Kem Lowry will receive the Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Foundation Award for Faculty Service to the Community.

The award recognizes faculty members, two from UH-Manoa and two from other UH campuses, who made significant contributions that strengthen ties between the university and the community.

Brashear is a lecturer in the natural sciences department at Hawaii Community College who is active in volunteering with environmental, educational and community groups. She has provided testimony at county and public hearings on environmental issues that affect Big Island residents.

Ferguson is a professor of political science and chairwoman of the Women's Studies Program at UH-Manoa. She is active in university programs and in Project Road, which helps teach dyslexic children to read, write and spell.

Krupp is an associate professor of biological science at Windward Community College and an affiliate faculty member at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. He is involved with environmental organizations and has led group tours in the waters off Coconut Island to observe coral activity to promote public awareness.

Lowry is a professor and the chairman of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at UH-Manoa. Lowry has dedicated more than 30 years of community service not only to residents living in Hawaii, but to those in other countries.
