Vineyard St. in Nuuanu.The NAACP is currently focusing its attention on the No Child Left Behind act and its impact. The group's involvement with PTSA of Hawaii is part of a five-year plan of action to ensure civil rights is rooted in the education system.
Music of the agesThe UST Singers of Manila, comprising students and alumni led by professor Fidel Calalang Jr. from the pontifical University of Santo Tomas, will be performing at the Blaisdell Center Concert Hall Friday as part of its 2004 World Concert Tour.The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $75, $50 and $30. The UST Singers received numerous accolades, including the distinction of Choir of the World at the 49th Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales in 1995, and the "Best Choir" at the 2001 World Choral Festival in Puebla, Mexico. The choir's repertoire includes more than 100 original and rearranged anthology of songs spanning five centuries. Writing contest openThe Oahu Art Center is seeking entries to its 2004 Writing Contest, open to all Hawaii and South Pacific Island residents.There are three categories as follows:
>> Fiction: 2,000-word limit.The prizes are $100, $75, and $50 for first-, second- and third-place winners in each category. No more than one entry is allowed per person in each category. Writers may enter more than one category if the appropriate entry fee is included. There is a $10 entry fee for each category entered. Entries without a fee will not be forwarded to the judges. Make checks payable to Oahu Arts Center and mail to Elsha Bohnert, OAC 2004 Writing Contest Chair, 94-261 Keaolani St., Mililani, HI 96789-1827. Entries must be postmarked on or before Nov. 15, 2004. Do not put your name on any of the manuscript pages. A coversheet should accompany each entry, including: category, title, author's name, word count/line count, address, telephone number, and email address. Submissions must be typed and double-spaced on only one side of standard white 8- 1/2-by-11-inch paper. Poetry may be single-spaced. Only letter-quality computer printouts or clear photocopies are acceptable. Entries will not be returned. None of the entries will be published, and authors retain all rights. Previously published work may be submitted. Only winners will be notified, and awards will be presented at the Oahu Arts Center Holiday Celebration on Dec. 17, 2004.
