Case hosts workshops on immigration issuesU.S. Rep. Ed Case will host a series of statewide workshops to help the public with immigration concerns.The workshops will help people understand the complex immigration laws and how they relate to homeland security needs and regulations. Five workshops will be held on four islands and will feature officials from the Honolulu and California offices of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (formerly called Immigration and Naturalization Service). Pearl City Library set for renovation closurePearl City Public Library will close for renovations for about three weeks starting next Monday.The book drop will be closed as well. Library users may visit neighboring libraries, including Aiea, Kapolei, Salt Lake-Moanalua and Waipahu. An announcement will be made when the library is ready to reopen. Renovations include replacing walkways leading to the library's main entrance to improve accessibility.
Auto technician guilty of car insurance fraudA former auto body technician who became the first person in the state to be convicted by a jury of car insurance fraud has been sentenced to probation and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service, the state's Insurance Division said last week.Hiram Lee Whitaker III, 30, was convicted in April. Whitaker claimed in March 2001 that his Toyota MR2 was vandalized while it sat in front of his home. He filed a claim for the loss, but an investigation raised questions about the claim's authenticity. District Judge Hilary Gangnes also ordered Whitaker to pay $100 to the crime victims' compensation fund and a $150 probation service fee. Two boys and a 19-year-old man were airlifted to the Queen's Medical Center in serious condition yesterday after an off-road collision near Dillingham Airfield. |
The boy was taken to the Queen's Medical Center, an emergency medical services supervisor said.
The accident happened at about 7:30 p.m. The victim had no pulse when rescue crews arrived at the scene, but paramedics were able to revive him, another EMS supervisor said.
There were no other injuries reported. Police were investigating the accident last night.
