Mira Costa wins Ann Kang Invitational

The Mira Costa (Calif.) girls volleyball team defeated Kalani 25-16, 25-14 last night at Iolani School to win the Ann Kang Invitational championship for the third straight year.

Mira Costa swept through three matches yesterday to claim the tournament title, beating fellow California schools Buena and Redondo Union to reach the final.

Kalani lost to Redondo Union in its first match of the day. But the Falcons rebounded to beat Corona Del Mar and Buena to stay alive, and defeated Redondo Union 25-20, 25-11 to advance to the championship match. The Falcons were looking to become the first local team to win the tournament since Pearl City claimed the championship in 1997.

Lajola, Hunt second in USTA doubles

Aiea's Dennis Lajola and partner Jamie Hunt fell to national clay court champions Sam Querry and Spencer Vegosen, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, in yesterday's final of the USTA Boys 16 doubles championship at Kalamazoo, Mich.

Lajola and Hunt, from Texas, were the second seeds. Querry and Vegosen were seeded third.

McClain headlines Quarterback Club

Acting University of Hawaii president David McClain will speak at the Honolulu Quarterback Club's weekly meeting tomorrow at the Pagoda Ballroom.

Also scheduled to speak are Artie Wilson, the color analyst for UH basketball television broadcasts, and Phil Neddo, head coach of the national champion Honolulu Bulls soccer team.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m., with the program to begin at noon. The public is invited.

Theocharidis, Magaoay host adult clinic

Former Hawaii men's volleyball players Barry Magaoay and Costas Theocharidis will conduct an adult volleyball skills clinic in cooperation with Volleyball, Etc., a service provider for volleyball development.

The two-day clinic is scheduled for this Friday and Saturday at the Manoa Valley Recreation Center gym.

Theocharidis was a two-time national player of the year and four-time All American hitter for the Warriors (2000-03). Magaoay was a setter for the Warriors (1988-91).

The clinics are designed for adults of all skill levels. Emphasis will be on individual skills, as well as team offense, defense and transition skills. Friday's session is from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday's session is from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The cost is $40 on or before Wednesday, $50 after. For more information, call 630-1389 or 422-9501.
