Jose Prado: Allegedly signed for and picked up a van that was shipped with "ice" in it

Big Island officers seized 21 pounds of crystal methamphetamine with a street value of $1.4 million and filed drug charges against a 26-year-old California man in what police are calling the biggest "ice" bust in county history.

Jose Alberto Prado, who is being held in a Hilo cell block on $100,000 bail, was charged yesterday with first-degree promotion of dangerous drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officers also arrested a Big Island man, whose age was not released, in connection with the case. He is being held for allegedly possessing drug paraphernalia, but has not been charged.

Acting on a tip from the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, police seized the "ice" in late July from a 1995 Ford van at Hilo Harbor that had been shipped to the island.

After the drugs were found, officers set up round-the-clock surveillance of the van. On Thursday, Prado allegedly signed for and picked up the vehicle, police said.

He then parked the van at a Hilo mall and left it. He was arrested at 5:20 p.m. Friday on Banyan Drive in Hilo, as was the Big Island man.

"This arrest and drug seizure should notify drug dealers that the Hawaii County Police Department will not tolerate the trafficking of illegal drugs on the Big Island," said East Hawaii Criminal Investigation Division police Capt. Samuel Thomas.

Also involved in the operation were state and federal agents, including U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration officers.

A motorcycle driver was seriously injured yesterday morning in Hawaii Kai when he drove into the back of a minivan that had stopped to make a U-turn, police said.

The accident happened at about 8:50 a.m. yesterday on Kealahou Street, about 155 feet east of Makaaoa Street. Police said the van was not at an intersection.

The motorcycle driver was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, but was later upgraded to serious.

His age was not available last night.

No one in the van was injured, police said.
