Former Star-Bulletin photographers Bob Young and Dick Schmidt attended the opening of Warren Roll's photography exhibition, "News-Photography of Hawaii 1956-1980," Aug. 5 in San Francisco. Warren, 83, was the Bulletin's crusty chief photographer. Dick writes that Bob flew from in from Honolulu, arrived late that afternoon for the 6 p.m. event and was back at SFO barely in time to catch his return flight to Honolulu. He spent only one hour at the reception. "That's quite a tribute to Warren," Dick wrote, "but as Bob said, 'It's worth it to honor Warren. He was always a wonderful boss. He treated his staff well and I respect him very much.' One of the photos displayed in this gallery exhibit is a wonderful moment from the 1960s when Warren and Helen Altonn were covering a hippie-commune nude beach story on North Shore, Kauai." Dick includes a photo in which the back view of a nude male is seen behind Helen, who for some reason is looking the other way ...

Don Parker celebrated his 60th birthday recently in the private dining room at Ruth's Chris with wife Sally, sister Judy Cochran and stepdaughters Amie Klemmer, Beth Harbottle and Meghan Buck. Then he and Sally flew off to San Francisco where she threw a party at Trader Vic's in his honor. Years ago Don was with the S.F. 49ers but an injury cut short his career ..
Attorney Leslie Lum and Dr. Lance Kurata welcomed their first child, Michael, on May 23. Grandparents Elmer and Verna Lum and Paul and Eloise Kurata are just as excited as the parents. Lance says the baby has Michelin thighs ... Forensic scientist Henry Lee dined at Shanghai Bistro Monday. Ex-prosecutor Keith Kaneshiro was in the party of eight. Lee is a friend of Shanghai owner Li May Tang. Chef Chih-Chieh Chang prepared a special dinner for the party. Lee has been involved in high-profile cases, including those of O.J.
