Aloha Airlines to add Reno flight

Aloha Airlines is adding a daily flight between Reno, Nev., and Maui, starting Dec. 15. and ending its twice-weekly service between Honolulu and Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.

The new flight will stop through Burbank, Calif., and joins Aloha's existing daily service between Honolulu and Reno. The last Rarotonga flight will be on Dec. 11.

The airline is offering introductory fares as low as $398 roundtrip from Reno to Maui.

Northwest to boost Seattle service

Northwest Airlines said it will start flying a larger, 273-seat plane daily between Seattle and Honolulu starting Dec. 15 to meet the heavy winter travel demand.

The DC-10 aircraft will have 49 more seats than the Boeing 757-300 flight that serves the Pacific Northwest route, the airline said.

Island Air expansion adds jobs

Island Air said it has created 155 new jobs in Hawaii to support its expansion of interisland flights since it was sold by the parent of Aloha Airlines in May.

The carrier has added flights to Hilo, Kona and Lihue. The new positions, including pilots, ramp agents and administrative personnel, include 99 new jobs in Honolulu and 20 in Kahului, Maui, Island Air said.

Japan's economic growth slows

TOKYO >> Japan's economy grew at a slower-than-expected 0.4 percent in the quarter ended June 30, the government said today, with strong exports powering a continuing recovery that was held in check by a softening in consumption and corporate investments.

The Cabinet Office data for the gross domestic product, or the value of a nation's goods and services, show the world's second-largest economy expanded at an annualized rate of 1.7 percent for the April-June period from the previous quarter.

Although that's more moderate than the booming growth for Japan the last two quarters, the numbers are a welcome sign of an upturn in an economy that had been in the doldrums for more than a decade. The economy had grown at a stunning annualized pace of 6.6 percent in January-March.
