Nine students, chosen from more than 50 applicants, are participating in the Straub Foundation's Summer Student Research Program.
The eight-week program, which began June 21, introduces undergraduates to a career in medicine and clinical research. They receive hands-on experience as members of research teams under guidance of a principal investigator, usually a physician.
The program is supported by contributions from the community, including Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc., the Pietsch Family Fund and Straub Clinic & Hospital.
All students are from Hawaii and attend colleges on the mainland. The students, principal investigators and research projects are as follows:
>> Roy Nicholas Chang, of Stanford University, with Dr. Elna Masuda, researching nonsurgical treatment of venous disease.
>> Summer Chong, of Santa Clara University, with David Yee, studying diagnosis for fungal infection of toenails.
>> Christopher Gibu, of the University of California-Los Angeles, with Dr. Frank Tabrah, studying electrical stimulation of wound healing.
>> Nalani Grace, of Stanford University, with Dr. Leonard Kryston, monitoring glucose levels in post-cardiac surgery patients.
>> Justin Mitsuo, of UCLA, with Dr. Edward Weldon, investigating mechanisms to prevent dislocation of the shoulder.
>> Megan Murai, of Boston University, with Dr. Fedor Lurie, examining risk factors for air travel-related deep vein thrombosis.
>> Tiffany Tanaka, of Stanford University, with Dr. Robert Kistner, analyzing standardization of tests for chronic venous disease.
>> Christopher Tokin, of the University of Notre Dame, with Dr. George McPheeters, studying prevention of hair loss after chemotherapy for cancer.
>> Janna Lynn Young, of the University of California-Santa Barbara, with Dr. Suzanne Yandow, examining how to improve muscular protection of the knee in young female athletes.
