Listeria contamination prompts hot dog recall

WASHINGTON >> About 5,360 pounds of hot dog products distributed in Hawaii, California, Idaho, Minnesota, Texas, Utah and Washington state are being recalled by a Salt Lake City company because they might be contaminated with listeria, the Agriculture Department said yesterday.

The products from Hi-Grade Meats Inc. were produced July 16 and distributed, the USDA said.

The recall, covering 10-pound boxes bearing a "made on" date of July 19 and labeled as "bulk pak," includes hot polish sausage, beef franks, bratwurst and franks. Also recalled are 10-pound packages that read "Hi-Grade wieners, nonfat dry milk added" with case code 00268.

The company discovered the problem but has received no reports of illnesses, the department said.

Health officials say the infection, caused by eating listeria-tainted food, results in a higher rate of hospitalization than any other food-borne illness. Symptoms are fever, muscle aches and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea or diarrhea.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact the company at 801-487-5818, ext. 12, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. EDT weekdays.
