Kono leads stroke play championship

Stephanie Kono shot 2-over-par 74 to take the lead after the first round of the HSWGA Stroke Play Championship yesterday at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Mari Chun, Rachel Kyono and Kaya Morinaga are tied for second at 76 in the three-day tournament. Ayumi Hori is another shot back at 77.

Isobe helps U.S win world team title

Gerald Isobe shot a 77 in the final round of the fifth Biennial World Deaf Golf Championship to help the U.S. men's squad win the team title last Friday at the Royal Drottningholm Golf Club in Stockholm, Sweden.

Isobe, the junior varsity coach at Punahou School, shot rounds of 77 and an 81 in the tournament and finished seventh among 70 golfers from 13 countries.

Oahu team to play in Cal Ripken World Series

The Oahu All-Stars earned a berth in the Cal Ripken World Series with a 9-1 win over the Visalia All-Stars (Central California) yesterday in the championship game of the Pacific Southwest Regional in Fallon, Nev.

The world series for players 11-12 will be held Aug. 10-22 in Aberdeen, Md.

Pearl City advances to regional

The Pearl City Senior League team (ages 15-16) advanced to the West Regional with a 13-2 victory over Washington in the championship game of the divisional tournament yesterday in Missoula, Mont.

Kellen Ushijima went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run and drove in five runs for Pearl City. Shannon Liu picked up the win on the mound and also drove in two runs.

Pearl City will play in the West Regional which begins Saturday in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

Hawaii wrestlers named All-Americans

Four female wrestlers with Team Hawaii earned All-American honors at the Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D., last weekend.

Kailua's Danyelle Hedin placed third in the 119-pound division and won the award for most pins. She has been invited to attend Northern Michigan University this fall to train at the U.S. Olympic Education Center.

Desiree Memea (University High) placed third in the 175-pound class, Carla Watase (Iolani) finished fifth in the 101-pound division and Shyla Iokia (Baldwin) placed seventh in the 128-pound class. Also participating in the tournament were Kelli Furumoto (Hawaii Baptist), Lauren Primiano and Sheryl Manglaylay (Lahainaluna).

Local players headed to Michigan

Five players from Hawaii will be competing in next week's USTA Boys National Tennis Tournament in Kalamazoo, Mich.

In the 18s division are Hyatt Bailey of Honolulu and Kauai's Jordan Kukino. In the 16s division are Dennis Lajola of Aiea, Kamuela's Holden Ching and Michael Lim of Honolulu.

The championships run from Aug. 6-15. The Web site is www.ustaboys.com.

Hiroshima Hawaii Goodwill tourney set

The fifth annual Hawaii Goodwill Tournament -- featuring two Japanese all-star youth baseball teams featuring players 12-under from around the Hiroshima Prefecture against two Hawaii teams in friendly competition -- is set Saturday at Manoa Field and Sunday at Hawaii Kai Peace Corps Field.

Three games will be played on each day. The tournament is sponsored by Hawaii Winter Baseball -- the 13th international tournament between Hawaii and Japan organized by HWB since 1998.

Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona will meet a delegation from Hiroshima Aug. 9 to discuss the continuation of the sister-state relationship.

Billfish tournament on Big Island

KAILUA-KONA >> The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament is set for Aug. 8-14. Teams from the United States, Tahiti, Australia and Japan will compete in the tournament held in waters off the Kona Coast.

The drawing for charters is Aug. 8, with fishing beginning Monday at 7 a.m. Fish between 250 and 300 pounds will be released after inspection.

Hawaii-Hilo volleyball tryouts start Aug. 10

Tryouts for the Hawaii-Hilo women's volleyball team are scheduled for Aug. 10 beginning at 7 a.m. at the new UHH Gym.
