Lennox L. Cowie, University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy astrophysicist, has been named a fellow of the British Royal Society.
One of the most prestigious honors that a British scientist can achieve, the fellowship was awarded this year to 44 scientists for contributions to science, engineering and technology.
Rolf-Peter Kudritzki, Institute for Astronomy director, said the honor reflects the high caliber of the institute's faculty. He said he holds Cowie in the "highest esteem as a researcher."
Cowie's work has helped shape understanding of interstellar gas. He has also produced major catalogs of galaxies.
Cowie earned his undergraduate degree at Edinburgh University and his doctorate degree at Harvard University. He joined UH-Manoa in 1986 after positions at Princeton University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Space Telescope Science Institute. He was IFA associate director from 1986 to 1997.
